Introduction
How is it possible for a place as wild, weird and wonderful as Iceland be so close? You can find out in five amazing (and amazingly well-choreographed) days! On this easy escape you'll see great streams of lava...glimmering glaciers...fjords teeming with whales...thundering waterfalls...and a solitude that leaves you feeling oh-so-far from home. One moment you're overwhelmed by an endless colony of puffins, and the next an impossibly colorful sunset fills the sky. The Icelanders you meet are colorful and cordial - from your terrific local guides to shark fisherman to the family that invites you in for lunch at their private home in a remote fishing village. Along the way, you'll dig into a lobster feast, stroll on a beach of inky black sand, and stay in luxury hotels that capture the island's unique vibe. It's all of the Iceland you ever imagined (and more) in less than a week.
Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-2 - REYKJAVIK / HELLA
After meeting in Reykjavik, it’s just a short drive out into the wilderness for beautiful walks in the highlands near Mount Hekla. Trails lead through lava fields surrounded by pink, blue, yellow and purple mountains. You’ll stop at the world’s first known geyser... see the tectonic rift valley in Þingvellir National Park... and even learn about the world’s first parliament, founded here in the year 930. Your luxury resort is bounded on one side by a salmon river and on the other by a volcano.

DAYS 3-5 - SNAEFELLSNES / REYKJAVIK
Out on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, your countryside hotel overlooks a glacier-capped volcano. Meals here are in some of Iceland’s renowned gourmet restaurants. And your daily expeditions include whale watching, fine coastal walks where you literally can touch lava that has flowed into the sea, and the chance to meet a shark fisherman.

On the final day of our Iceland tours, visit the remote village of Bogarnes where the local police chief and his family invite you into their home for a traditional lunch overlooking the sea. Reinvigorated by your Iceland escape, you part company back at the Reykjavik airport.
Picture yourself...
  • Witnessing the lava flows of Mount Hekla
  • Spotting pairs of Atlantic Puffins nesting for the summer
  • Exploring Iceland's oldest national park

Southwestern Iceland is a beautiful travel destination, but it might be considered cold by tourists coming from warmer locations. Summer months are more moderate, with the average temperature being about fifty degrees. For this reason, the main tourist season in southwestern Iceland is during the summer months, primarily between June and August. There is no particular rainy season in southwestern Iceland, and storms are relatively rare.
