Introduction
For all you’ve heard about life in post-revolution Cuba, one of the country’s great surprises is how much of its pre-Castro history has been preserved—and how that past and present coexist today. This fascinating people-to-people expedition begins in the colorful colonial cities of Cienfuegos and Trinidad, where we explore cobblestoned streetscapes, walk in lush mountains and snorkel on the tropical coral reef in the Bay of Pigs. In Havana, we wander in the 500-year-old city center and out to Hemingway’s home. Throughout, you’ll interact closely with farmers, artists, a Santeria priest, horticulturists, cooks and everyday Cubans from all walks of life. You’ll get a sense of Cuba from its pre-colonial days right up to the latest moment in today’s normalization process. And you’ll be rewarded with a well-rounded understanding of Cuba that’s second to none.
Picture yourself...
  • Walking to a working finca in the scenic Escambray Mountains
  • Snorkeling over a pristine reef in the Bay of Pigs
  • Chatting with vintage car restorers in their workshop
Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-4 – CIENFUEGOS AND TRINIDAD
Following an overnight in Miami and a brief charter flight to Santa Clara, Cuba, we pay a visit to the Che Guevara Memorial before the drive to Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage city known as the “Pearl of the South.” From our seaside hotel, we’ll go for a walk in this well-preserved city renowned for its surprisingly French style. In the nearby Escambray Mountains, we’ll walk on a trail carved just for us past a waterfall and coffee plantations to a private lunch at our friend’s finca. We’ll also visit 500-year-old Trinidad, a city of sparkling pastel buildings. You’ll meet our friend Israel who is a white-magic priest in Yemaya Temple and have time to wander and shop on your own. Back in Cienfuegos, a horticulturalist will host us at the mind-boggling expanse of the Botanical Gardens, and one of our guide’s favorite choral groups will treat us to a private concert.

DAYS 5-7 – THE BAY OF PIGS AND HAVANA
At the Bay of Pigs, we’ll visit the museum where the Cubans commemorate their victory in the failed 1961 invasion. The happy shock of the bay is that it contains a pristine coral reef where we’ll take time for some colorful snorkeling. A drive to Havana takes us first to the Nostalgic Car workshop, where we learn about the local passion for owning and restoring vintage American autos—then we hop into some of the finest for a drive to Revolution Square and other points of interest before arriving at our hotel. Our time in Havana includes a colorful spectrum of activities, such as shopping in a market on a Cuban family’s budget…visiting the artists and musicians at La Muraleando…a guided walk in Old Havana…a visit to Hemingway’s home…and a cooking instruction in a traditional restaurant.

DAYS 8 – HAVANA AND RETURN TO MIAMI
On our final morning, we’ll stroll on the Malecón past the newly re-opened U.S. Embassy and visit the legendary Hotel Nacional. Later, we return to Miami via charter flight.

Cuba’s climate is “semi-subtropical”, which means it is warm all year with relatively small seasonal variations. To take advantage of that fact—and to offer you the most flexibility to participate in our program—Classic Journeys schedules departures in many months of the year. From November to April, which is the dry season, daytime temperatures average 78-85 degrees. The rainy season extends from May through October. At the peak of summer in August, temperatures climb into the 90s. The official hurricane season runs from June through early November, though hurricanes are more likely to occur from August through early October.
