Introduction
On a recent Barcelona tour, when we asked our guides how to describe Catalonia to you, they surprised us. "Tell them we are Tuscany, only better." We'll admit they have a point. Spain's easternmost province is a sensory revelation that easily equals the best of Italy. The olive groves, the cypress trees that pierce the horizon like leafy exclamation points, and the perched stone villages all shimmer in the region's incredible light. The aromas of the local markets and the fresh Mediterranean air along the Costa Brava remind you how rich the world really is. And stimulated by walks in rustic countryside or on the cosmopolitan avenues on a cultural tour of Barcelona, your sense of taste will be more than satisfied by the vivid flavors of Catalan cuisine. With all due respect to our guides, this tour offers so much that Tuscany can't—paths through a park full of extinct volcanoes…a dip in the sea at your private resort…and fascinating Moorish-accented history and architecture that leave no mistake you're in Spain. If you have already enjoyed time in Southern Europe's other favorite regions but don't want to repeat yourself, make this your next destination. We promise you won't be disappointed!
Picture yourself...

Itinerary at a glance
DAY 1 - BARCELONA
We meet in Barcelona (1 night) where we take in the architectural treasures including Gaudi's still-incomplete cathedral, La Sagrada Familia, before a stroll through the Gothic Quarter and dinner at one of the city's most renowned paella restaurants.

DAYS 2-3 - VIC
You'll be forgiven if you think you've accidentally ended up in Tuscany, as a mid-day walk leads us through rolling hills to scenic Vic in northern Catalonia (2 nights). We’re fueled by a picnic lunch gathered at a covered market overflowing with local fruits and vegetables. Our parador hotel is a beautifully restored farmhouse with a tempting swimming pool and the casual vibe of country life. Our forays from here include a walk to Santa Pau, a fortified medieval village in Garrotxa Volcanic Park. We'll also visit with a local potter at his workshop and explore the Jewish baths dating to the 11th century.

DAYS 4-7 - GIRONA - BEGUR / BARCELONA
We've scouted a wonderful trail that takes us into the remote village of Girona, whose houses seem to tilt over the River Onyar. And in plenty of time for an afternoon swim, we settle into the luxurious seaside resort at Begur that is our home for the next three days.

We'll strike out from the nearby town of Pals for our guide's favorite walk past streams and olive groves en route to a village carved out of sheer rock. There's time for a visit to the outlandish Dali museum in Figueres as well. Our final full day is dedicated to the coastal trails of the Costa Brava—from Cap Roig's promontory and botanical garden, along white sand beaches, to the pastel-colored fishing village of Llafranc. Afternoon tea is in a lighthouse on Cap Sant Sebastia overlooking the vibrant blue Mediterranean. On our final morning, we return to Barcelona before parting company.

Guest Reviews
“It was the end of a perfect day. We were dining outside in the garden of our exquisite hotel with our fellow travelers. The weather was balmy. The gourmet food defied description. A piano played softly. I looked up to the sky and there was a full moon. It was a magical evening that I will never forget.”

Is it Wednesday or Thursday?
Days of the week are starting to be less important with each morning that you awaken in a magnificent parador on our vacations in Spain. Happily, our guide has a plan that includes a morning walk past secluded coves ringed by umbrella pines and ochre-colored villas, with ample time in a well-tiled fishing village for lunch.
Our small groups offer more options
Fewer guests give us more flexibility on our Barcelona tours and everywhere in Spain we vacation. We always offer alternate walks, time off for relaxing, and other options at no extra cost.

Barcelona and the Costa Brava have a warm, breezy coastal climate. The temperature is generally very temperate, with a daily highs from 68 to 78 degrees and evening temperatures around 60 degrees. As we’ll be spending much of our time along the coast, the warm sunshine is moderated by the winds that blow off the sea.
