Introduction
Patagonia is a glorious paradise. Great escarpments of glacial ice slice into super-chilled mountain lakes. One day, you’re walking in a high forest carpeted with yellow and orange wildflowers. The next, you’re in a sundrenched vineyard up against a deep blue backdrop of Andes. Condors soar overhead. Ears up, guanacos graze near your paths. And you’ll realize again how big the outdoors really can feel—whether you’re lacing on crampons for a glacier walk or gliding past icebergs to a stunningly remote sheep ranch. Every step of the way, you’ll be in the company of local guides as well as naturalists and other experts. And we love to show you every wonder in special Classic Journeys’ fashion—with unique events like a personal welcome at a premiere vineyard, traditional Argentine barbecues, and truly distinctive lodgings. We know of no better place to absorb the grand sweep of nature.
Picture yourself...

Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-3 - MENDOZA
Our Patagonia and Mendoza wine tours meet in Mendoza (3 nights), known for the “Route of the Wines.” Here in the heart of Argentina’s fine wine region, we’ll have a chance to tour the vineyards with a local agronomist for tastings of fine Cabernets and Malbecs. We’ll also take a spectacularly scenic walk in the foothills of Mt. Aconcagua, one of the seven summits, and linger over a countryside picnic with views of the Andes.

DAYS 4-7 - EL CALAFATE
In the morning, we head south by air to El Calafate (3 nights), the gateway to the glacier district. Our boutique hotel overlooks Lake Argentina and is an easy stroll to a bird reserve that teems with flamingo and black-necked swans. The next morning we approach Perito Moreno Glacier by water and explore its surface in the company of our experienced local guide. We’ll picnic on a nearby slope, close enough that we might even hear the cracking of the ancient ice. Another lake cruise among freshly calved icebergs takes us to a working estancia (ranch) in a remote Andean valley.

On our final day, we part company in El Calafate where you can head straight back to Buenos Aires for connecting flights home. If you have some additional time to explore, we have a number of fine options to entice you to linger longer in South America. These include: Ushuaia in southern Patagonia with its Tierra del Fuego National Park and penguin rookery, spectacular Iguazu Falls in northern Argentina, and bordering Paraguay and Brazil. You can even extend your time in the Galapagos on our island-based exploration.

Special event: glacier walk
We never pass up the chance for a unique experience. So at Perito Moreno Glacier, Classic Journeys hires a special guide who’s an expert in glacier walking. He leads us — safely and memorably — across the surface of this crystalline marvel for an up-close look not available to most travelers. On any of our Patagonia tours, you’re likely to meet experts who help us explore local culture and natural history firsthand.
Our small groups offer more options
Fewer guests give us more flexibility in Argentina on our Patagonia and Mendoza wine tours. Enjoy alternate walks, time off for relaxing, and other options at no extra cost.
We are running this trip privately for individual groups this year. If you would like us to organize a private trip for you, your family or friends, please call or email us to discuss your details.

Cultural Walking Adventure

Argentina’s seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. We have scheduled our departures to coincide with Argentina’s spring and summer. We will be visiting several different regions during the tour and the weather will vary by region. Patagonia: The weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable and can change drastically at any time. The weather in the summertime is generally pleasant with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the evening in the 30s and 40s. However, given the topography of the region, high winds and rain may occasionally cause daytime temperatures to dip into the 30s and 40s. It has even been known to snow during the summertime so we recommend dressing in layers to be prepared for the fickle Patagonian climate.
