Introduction
Bangkok is to Thailand as Pad Thai is to Thai cuisine—no more than a wonderful taste of an exotic sensory experience. On this Classic Journey, we step far beyond the temple-spired capital to reveal the richness of this dazzling land. We’ll visit an elephant camp deep in the foothills of Chiang Dao to meet the mahouts, men who are more the partners than the masters of the revered animals. Our walks take us from dike-top paths in emerald rice paddies to remote villages where proud hill tribes practice ancient traditions and crafts. We’ll seek the blessing of saffron-robed Buddhist monks at an early morning alms-giving…glide over rivers in classic long-tail boats…and be welcomed into one of the country’s finest kitchens. Because Thailand has a long history of hospitality to travelers, our accommodations here are especially fine—soothing ends to stimulating days.
Picture yourself...
  • Mingling with members of colorful hill tribes
  • Touring exquisite palaces and sacred temples
  • Riding elephants along forest and riverside paths
Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-2 - BANGKOK
We meet in exotic Bangkok, the Venice of the East (2 nights), with generous time for the Grand Palace, a countryside walk that leads to a visit with a village family, exploration of the klongs (canals) and even a traditional Thai massage.

DAYS 3-4 - CHIANG MAI
A brief air hop delivers us to Chiang Mai and our temple-style hotel (2 nights). On foot, we’ll explore the fine archaeological sites at Wiang Kum Kam and time our visit to a Buddhist temple to offer alms to monks. You’ll also enjoy a delicious cooking lesson at the Oriental Culinary Academy before our ascent by trail or by funicular to Wat Doi Suthep.

DAYS 5-6 - ANGKHANG NATURE RESORT
En route to Angkhang Nature Resort (2 nights), we'll stop for an elephant trek in a mountain forest. Walks in the cool air include a visit to a hill-tribe village and a bonsai garden. A relaxing boat trip on the lovely Mae Kok River gives us time to stop and mingle with the villagers and farmers to see their way of life.

DAYS 7-9 - CHIANG RAI / BANGKOK
We’ll settle into our spa hotel (2 nights), overlooking the hills of Laos. An array of activities here includes demonstrations of Siemese arts such as silk weaving and pottery. On our last day, there’s time for shopping in a local market before a flight back to Bangkok.

Thailand
Cultural Walking Adventure
9 Days / 8 Nights
Thailand has a warm to hot tropical climate with some variations in the far northern areas during the ‘cool’ season from November through February. Days and evenings will generally be quite hot and humid with minimal variation. When we venture into the northernmost areas (i.e. Chiang Mai and Doi Angkhang) the evenings will be a little cooler to cold at times. Doi Angkhang may be very cold at night.
