• Fall in the Italian Countryside

    7 Best Fall Vacations

With the end of summer on the horizon, don’t get discouraged by the chill in the air as the autumn season rolls in. It’s easy to hunker down in the fall and prepare for the winter season ahead. Instead, put off dragging your sweaters out of storage and opt-in for a fall vacation! Autumn travel offers pleasant weather and the joys of shoulder season with lower prices and far fewer crowds. Here are the destinations on the top of our list to visit this fall:

The Canadian Rockies

Experience the solitude of the Canadian Rockies away from the crowds and bask in the glory that is the autumn color painted throughout Lake Louise, the Sunwapta River, and Mount Victoria. The Canadian Rockies is teeming with wildlife—whether it be moose, elk, bears, or bighorn sheep—experience the exceptional flora and fauna through the lens of local guides and view the spectacular wildlife at the peak of their activity. Some say that hiking the spectacular gorges, marveling at the rushing waterfalls, and enjoying the snow-capped peaks is even more breathtaking in the dim fall light.

France

In reality, there is no wrong time to explore Normandy, Burgundy or the City of Light, But we think the fall just may be France's best season. Bask in the joys of Paris as the city's parks turn to hues of orange, yellow, and bright red. Admire the Jardin de Luxembourg and Palace of Versailles resembling the color and brilliance of an Impressionist painting, giving Claude Monet a run for his money. Burgundy is the perfect blend of classic French villages and rolling terrain with a patchwork of forests and harvesting vineyards that are utter perfection in the fall. Finally, enjoy the classic Norman picture-book villages, the stunning Mont-St-Michel, and Normandy's massive apple orchards that thrive at this time of the year. There is no better time to explore France than August through November!

Greek Isles

Autumn in Greece is heavenly—with balmy weather, warm water, and harvests of olives and grapes—you’re guaranteed a lovely time without the often-overwhelming crowds of summertime travel. Explore the remarkable ruins of Knossos and Delos, sample the fruits of cliff-hugging vineyards, and take in the iconic views from your hotel in Santorini all complete with a warm autumn glow that accentuates the charm of the Greek isles. Shoulder season gives you a chance to intimately engage with the local culture and meet the phyllo bakers, olive growers, archeologists, and villagers who live amid some of the loveliest scenery and finest historical treasures on earth.

Italy

In the fall, Italy presents the opportunity to enjoy the colorful countrysides of Tuscany, relish in the local markets spilling over with fresh produce in the Amalfi Coast, and take advantage of the pleasant weather in Sardinia & Corsica. Skip the usual cathedral-and-cappuccino circuit in the crowds and heat of the summer and visit Italy in the autumn to properly savor the local culture, cuisine, and charisma. September through October is the typical time for the grape harvest in the wine region and towns in Tuscany celebrate the production of wine with festivals galore! Partake in the joys of the harvest season and celebrate with a glass of wine form a local winery!

Bryce, Grand Canyon, Zion

Even as adults we play the pioneer game every time we visit this monumental trio of national parks. Imagine cresting the hills in your Conestoga wagon to behold the sights and breathtaking views Bryce, the Grand Canyon, and Zion have to offer. Deep canyons, brilliant red rock, bridges of stone, and boulders poised on slender spires amaze visitors year-round. However, the fall provides visitors with pleasant weather, far fewer crowds, great chances to spot wildlife, and colorful leaves that sprinkle Zion’s canyon floors and winding trails in late September and early October.

Charleston & Savannah

The coastal south is brimming with a distinctive meld of history, way of life, and charm that is all the more enjoyable as the autumn season graces Charleston and Savannah with clear blue skies, sunshine, and nice cool breezes. There's no other region in America with such a distinctive meld of history, climate, and way of life! Walk through moss-draped lanes, admire the fine restorations of prosperous homes, visit some of the country’s most unique living history museums, and stroll the old city streets under the shade of curvaceous oak trees.

Galápagos

Autumn in the Galápagos is a special time in the archipelago. In September, the Antarctic Humboldt current is strong—bringing hoards of wildlife to the scene. Escape the fall weather at home and get the chance to admire penguins, sea lions, and marine birds at the peak of their activity! The beginning of fall is also a prime opportunity to see humpback whales and their calves migrating, fur seals mating, dolphins playing in the cool water, and giant tortoises laying eggs on the white sandy beaches.

Autumn is just around the corner and it truly is the perfect time to explore some of our favorite destinations. If you can, skip the crowds and the heat of summer and pack your bags to revel in the joys of shoulder season! Quick Trips to Fit Your Busy Schedule

It’s hard to argue with the dream of a lazy month in Amalfi. How could a two-week safari in South Africa not have a certain appeal? When the stars align, an extended junket to India or New Zealand is the only way to go. But if your calendar is crowded, those windows of opportunity are as rare as a blue-footed booby dancing on your shoulder. You have plenty of vacation time; you just don’t have time to take a vacation. There’s your cousin’s wedding smack in the middle of June. Soccer tournaments, board meetings, holidays, jam-packed school years, the busy season when your boss frowns at PTO requests. Clearly, it’s time for a Quick Trip with Classic Journeys!

The Quick Trip formula is elegantly simple, and it comes from years of working with time-starved travelers—folks who are hungry for amazing experiences but who have to fit them into six days or less. Every Quick Trip is a no-compromises Classic Journeys’ vacation, hand-crafted to deliver immersive activities and cultural interactions in the company of full-time local guides. Award-winning luxury hotels and great food go without saying. In short, they’re fabulous vacations that don’t feel short at all. The same holds true for Cuba, where it’s super easy to pull off a satisfying four-day weekend in Havana. The even bigger surprise is just how close some hot-ticket destinations—Iceland, the Galápagos and even Morocco are from major U.S. gateway cities. So instead of defaulting to a lowest-common-denominator trip when time is tight, you can spread your wings and enjoy the trip of a lifetime.

If you’ve given up fitting a vacation into that calendar of yours, think again. Or if you’re lucky enough to already have longer getaways planned but wish you could squeeze in just one more, a Quick Trip is the fast and easy solution.

Iceland Escape
5 days/4 nights
Wild, weird and wonderful Iceland is crazy close. • Social distancing

    ROMEOS and Social Distancing

They call themselves ROMEOS—Retired Old Men Eating Out Sometimes—and one of them is actually the father of our Guest Services Manager here at Classic Journeys. Unable to go out for their weekly breakfast together, they took matters in their own hands and decided to find a way to still get together safely, using tape measures to literally ensure safe social distancing.

A neighbor spotted them, took a photo and posted it. And it became a viral sensation, gathering tens of thousands of likes.

That got us thinking that social distancing means something different to every person in our country and around the world. Because we are talking with our local guides around the world every day, we decided to make today’s conversation:

“What is social distancing like for you?”

From Iceland to Italy, Portugal to Japan, and Morocco to Montenegro, guides shared their insightful and often very funny commentary.

From Kommi in Iceland

“Because we have only about 340,000 people in Iceland and we are about the same size as the state of New York with 19 million people, social distancing means something very different to us. When our government told us to keep 6 feet apart, that seemed like we would be too close to one another!”

From Susana in Portugal

“Portuguese people are very tactile. We love to touch. We greet each other with a couple of kisses on the cheeks (men to woman, woman to men, woman to woman), hand shake (man to man) or hug each other (closer friends and family). Social distancing has changed not just how physically close to one another we are, but also our core beliefs on how to connect with one another.”

From Yumiko in Japan

’Japan is not famous for being a warm culture. Instead of hugs and kisses, we greet each other with bows. So, in a way, social distancing is the norm for Japanese people. That said, spring is the one time of the year when we gather in big crowds to enjoy the cherry blossoms with family and friends. For that fleeting moment, we are much closer with one another. This year, unfortunately, may be the exception.’’

From Saida in Morocco

“In Morocco, social distancing is like torture to us. We love to be together and hug each other all the time, even if we don’t know each other. When walking with a friend, we are close to each other a lot, to the extent sometimes, we hold hands with each other like lovers, even when we are not.”

From Ulisse in Italy

“We Italians are adjusting to something completely new. It is depriving us (temporarily I hope) of a big part of what defines Italians and makes us loved all around the world—the friendliness of a handshake, two kisses on the cheeks to greet a good friend or a warm hug that says: ‘I am happy to see you’. It is a sacrifice for all. On the happy side of things, all around Italy people are leaning out of their balconies to sing. We can’t help it... it’s in our blood... we have to sing all the time. Not even Coronavirus can keep Italians from serenading!”

From Rosemary in Canada

“My friends and I no longer share thermoses of coffee but we share a lot more jokes to keep each other’s spirits going. I think that we have become a lot more aware and considerate of each other. I keep my physical distance from you but at the same time I offer to get something at the store for you. We are all a lot more aware of the risks and stresses that each other are under so we are constantly checking in with one another in tiny ways.”

From Vibeke in Norway

“Our prime minister said it so well (it sounds actually better in Norwegian), ‘Take care of each other by not touching each other’. And I feel we are closer than before, taking care and giving each other tons of ‘verbal hugs’. I think we will come out if this as a more caring nation, as we will not take our well-being for granted anymore.”
