Itinerary at a glance
The port city of Chongqing is on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River about a 2.5 hour flight from Shanghai. On arrival, we’ll transfer to our luxury cruise ship for departure. Our beautifully furnished cabins all include private bath and balcony.
River cruising is a stately and satisfying way to travel, especially so on the Yangtze. The river is busy with interesting traffic, and both shores offer a spectrum of interesting sights. Today’s special visit is to Shibaozhai, one of the gems of Chinese architecture. A 12-story red pavilion clings to a precipitous rock to provide access to the pagoda at the top. Though this treasure will survive the rising waters from the Three Gorges Dam, it will soon become an island.
Unforgettable scenery unfolds as you cruise through the first of the fabled Three Gorges: Qutang Gorge, hemmed by towering cliffs. At Wushan, an excursion by cruiser takes you up the Daning River to view its renowned Small Gorges. Continue by sampan to the picturesque mini-gorges of the Ma Du River with its clear, swift running water, unusual rock formations, and monkeys and goats along the banks. Alternatively, your excursion may be on Shennong Stream with its impressive small gorges. On from Wushan, you’ll pass through Wu Gorge, celebrated for its Twelve Peaks, followed by the most scenic gorge of all, Xiling. The sailing day ends with a manmade marvel as your ship moves through the Three Gorges lock.
The dam, which is nearing completion, is the largest water conservancy project ever undertaken by man. Construction began in 1994 on the structure that is nearly a mile and a half long. The body of water it creates will stretch for more than 370 miles. This morning, you’ll visit the dam site. At the end of the cruise, we disembark at Yichang for the flight back to Shanghai. After checking in to our luxury hotel, the rest of your evening is yours at leisure.
After breakfast, we depart for the airport and flights home or perhaps to Hong Kong for a visit on your own.
