Introduction
All of the movies and photos and books you've read about Venice can't really prepare you for the moment when you step from a water taxi straight into the Piazza San Marco. Golden mosaics and pink palazzos…a traffic-jam of gondolas…the somber quiet of princely museums and the lazy flap of an umbrella over your table at the edge of the Grand Canal. Classic Journeys will see to it that you get the city you've always imagined on our Venice walking tours…and then we'll take you further. To the cheerfully painted fishing village of Burano. Into the private studios of glass-blowers and lace-makers. Through the maze of back streets where flowerboxes outnumber the Tintorettos. We'll also transport you back in time to the lovely mainland the original Venetians left behind (though today it's hard to imagine why). Known as the Veneto, it's Italy at its most graceful. We'll tour the stately villas that line the Brenta River, wander the medieval village of Asolo, and stroll through hilly vineyards in the shadow of the Alps. Altogether, it's a memorable chance to step past the expected and discover the true richness of this fabulous region.
Picture yourself...
  • Uncovering the delights of hidden Venice
  • Watching glassblowers and lacemakers at work
  • Wending our way through forests and vineyards
Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-3 - VENICE
We meet in Venice (3 nights) for an afternoon stroll to Piazza San Marco. The magnificent square is ringed by elegant cafés, overshadowed by the soaring Campanile, and focused on the resplendent Basilica di San Marco, which we explore. By vaporetto (water taxi), we spend a day on Venice's outlying islands—Murano, for a private demonstration in one of the ancient glass studios; Torcello, whose small village gives way to green countryside where we walk and picnic; and Burano, a colorful fishing village renowned for lace-making. An amble through classic Venice includes the tranquil Cannaregio district, the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal.

DAYS 4-5 - FOLLINA
Leaving Venice by boat, a lovely exploration along the Brenta River is highlighted by stunning villas by Palladio and other classic architects. We spend the day at a few of the finest—including famed Villa Malcontenta, exploring their interiors as well as grand gardens that virtually define Italian style. The day ends in the vineyards of Bassano del Grappa where fiery grappa is a by-product of wine production. Fortified with a magnificent breakfast on the terrace of our restored villa in Follina (2 nights), we enjoy our favorite walk of the week, past chestnut orchards and through the prosecco vineyards.

DAYS 6-7 - ASOLO / VENICE
Then we settle into the medieval village of Asolo (1 night), in the shadow of the pre-Alps. Venetian aristocrats built villas here and supported musicians, poets and painters whose effect is still strongly felt. Our walks here lead to a picnic in the olive groves and a chance to examine artisans' wares in colorful shops. Our final day we part company in Venice.

The Venice and Veneto region has a temperate climate. Generally days are sunny, with bright blue skies. The temperature is usually very comfortable. We suggest packing clothes that can be worn in layers, as early morning may have a chill that is quickly replaced with warm sunshine.
