Introduction
One of our most treasured travel snapshots is from our New Zealand adventure tour. It's us, as happy as we've ever been, picnicking royally in a tropical rainforest…at the foot of a glacier. No double exposure. It’s just the gorgeous, startling South Island. This was the real-world setting for The Lord of the Rings movies, so spectacular scenery is to be expected. But Classic Journeys will also introduce you to a land you wouldn’t find on your own. We’ll spend a day with a family as they work their vast sheep station. You'll sip the best pressings at some of the region's fast-emerging vineyards, and stargaze by ship-deck on a fiordland cruise. Our local guide has also arranged for naturalists, historians and other experts to share their knowledge about their utterly unique home. As you sample the native green lip mussels…learn about the Maori culture…and go on an evening stroll lit by glowworms, you’ll remember this as one of the most unique journeys of your life.

Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-2 - CHRISTCHURCH / ARTHUR'S PASS
Christchurch is the very civilized starting point of our walking tour of New Zealand. If you’re an early riser and a train-lover, consider boarding the TranzAlpine Express for the scenic ride to Arthur’s Pass. Or join our guide for the equally spectacular drive to Arthur’s Pass. Either way, you’ll cross the lovely Canterbury Plains—featured in the film The Lord of the Rings.

Into the Southern Alps we spend a day on a working merino sheep station near Arthur’s Pass (2 nights). We’ll walk in gorgeous beech forests, go birding in wildflower meadows and see our hosts put their sheepdogs through their paces.

DAY 3 - FOX GLACIER
Then it’s on to dramatic Fox Glacier (1 night) that ends, of all places, in a parrot-bedecked rainforest. On the shores of mirror-smooth Lake Matheson we’ll enjoy fine nature walks.

DAYS 4-5 - LAKE MOERAKI
From our lodge at Lake Moeraki (2 nights), our guides lead us on a flat, easy rainforest track to beautiful Munro Beach where we mingle with local wildlife that seasonally includes the Fiordland crested penguins.

DAYS 6-7 - QUEENSTOWN
A scenic drive to Queenstown (2 nights) includes an exploration of an historic gold mining village. Then a riverboat safari on the Dart River, with snow-capped peaks in the background, leads to a guided ramble filled with Maori legends and memorable views.

DAYS 8-9 - MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN
Our grand finale is Milford Sound (1 night), the gateway to the World Heritage Fiordland National Park. It’s a true natural wonder, and we’ll see it in the very best way – from the decks of the Milford Mariner. It’s not just a ship. It’s what some travelers call the ultimate bed and breakfast. From the observation lounge and the large open deck, you’ll have a front-row seat for the waterfalls, rainforests, mountains and wildlife. Experienced onboard naturalists offer commentary and answer your questions. We’ll cruise the entire length of the sound, all the way to the Tasman Sea, and enjoy some of the best stargazing you’ve ever experienced. Our final day we return to Queenstown where we part company or opt to join our Milford Track extension.

New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. The South Island normally has a temperate climate. The temperature is generally very comfortable. In the summer (our winter) during our trips, the region does not have very significant temperature extremes. However it can be cool in the morning as well as the evening. Rain is always a possibility. It is a good idea to prepare for the chance of chilly weather by packing some warm layers.
