Introduction
Brazil vibrates with life whether you’re deep in the heart of Rio de Janeiro or the vast wetlands of the Pantanal. On this trip, you will experience both faces of Brazil, one of the world’s most energetic societies and richest eco-treasuries. In Rio, you will experience the city like few visitors do as you ascend the highest peaks, penetrate a densely populated favela, hit the beach with sun-bronzed natives, and sample the music and food. Then you’re off to the Pantanal, the largest tropical wetland on earth. At a glance, it may look empty, but life teems here too as 1,000 bird species and hundreds of kinds of mammals and reptiles thrive in this easy-to-navigate terrain. On horseback, in a canoe, on foot and aboard safari vehicles, you’ll get an up-close look at the unique ecosystem and learn about the challenges of preserving it. Beginning to end, you’ll be accompanied by deeply experienced local guides who break down barriers and assure you up-close cultural experiences you’ll all remember.

Itinerary at a glance
DAYS 1-4 - RIO DE JANEIRO
We meet in Rio de Janeiro and settle into our 5-star hotel overlooking the legendary white-sand beaches. An afternoon walk focuses on the historic heart of Rio. We end the day in the artsy hilltop neighborhood of Santa Teresa for a dinner overlooking the city.

Our days in Rio are full of terrific contrasts. There’s a narrow-gauge train ride to the top of Corcovado Mountain with its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. We’ll follow the beat into the night to a show bar known as the temple of bossa nova. You won’t forget your visit to Brazil’s largest favela, the teeming hillside shantytown where we see a life that tourists miss, including a visit to a local school. And we’ll join a chef in her kitchen to cook a classic dinner for ourselves (while sipping a caipriniha.)

Urban Rio actually contains a 12-square-mile Atlantic rainforest, and you’ll have the chance to explore it on a canopy tour with a zip-line ride or on a down-to-earth guided walk. And of course, we’ll board the tram for the ascent to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain with its 360-degree views.

DAYS 5-8 - PANTANAL
A 2.5-hour plane ride into the vastness of the Brazilian interior takes us to a 7,000-acre private reserve in the Pantanal…wetlands that are 30 times the size of the modern Everglades. Our perfectly situated eco-lodge is the ideal spot for guided nature walks where you may catch sight of hyacinth macaws and capybara. We explore in a variety of other ways, too—aboard an all-terrain vehicle for a photo safari, by canoe on a placid river where we may spot caimans and giant river otters, and on the agile horses favored by the local cowboys. The sunsets are nothing short of spectacular. But so are the nights when we strike out on an after-dark safari and to go star-gazing in the least light-polluted skies you may have ever seen. On our final day, we’re awakened again by the monkey chorus before our return flight to Rio.
