  • We recently had the chance to talk about family vacation planning with a three-time Classic Journey guest. She offers her take on planning the perfect family vacation.

Tina Blumenfeld—multi-tasking mom and self-appointed family travel guru—thought she’d have trouble “turning over the reins to Classic Journeys. But it turned out to be a huge blessing.” Since her family’s first multi-generational trip with us to the Canadian Rockies, she and her husband, their three kids, and “Grandma Go-For-It” have been back for Costa Rica and the Amalfi Coast.

    On getting her own vacation…
“Going to Costa Rica, it felt weird not being in charge. But only at first. I got to sit back and have a one-week vacation that felt like a month because I was so involved in the daily experiences instead of thinking about where to find dinner.”

    On turning kids into travelers…
“I want Jack, Evan and Elliana to love travel like we do. The kids-only activities on Family Journeys like beachcombing or going to an artist to make ceramics give them some nice independence. It plants the seed that they want to be out there and experience things, and I love doing that for them.”

    On her “guide envy”…
“My kids sort of listen to me. But they really hear and pay attention to these guides. Of course, if I knew how to spot crazy Costa Rican lizards and throw surprise picnics at the base of the Athabasca Glacier, I’d probably rate better. The kids think of our guides as best friends and want to send them Christmas cards.”

    On 6- and 81-year-olds traveling together…
“Our day of rafting on the Kicking Horse River in the Canadian Rockies shows how there’s always a great sense of inclusion on these trips. While the rest of us hit the whitewater, our guide arranged a special boat for my dad and my daughter. They kept to quieter water…but we all got to have great adventures.”

    On where the whining went…
“I have great kids, but still I was pleasantly shocked at how they rose to the occasion on these trips. On our Family Journeys we’ve seen that there’s this great energy that gets created when kids get together. They bond with the kids from the other families. They go farther and get along better. May I just say, ‘Whew!’”
