  • Zambia: An African Walking Safari

Itinerary at a glance

We meet in Livingstone (3 nights), where our luxury lodge sits on the Zambezi River within view (and an easy stroll) of the top of Victoria Falls. Of course, we’ll see the cataracts from all sides of the Batoka Gorge and the island where Dr. Livingstone first laid eyes on this natural wonder. The chief of a 700-year-old mud and thatch village welcomes us into his home for a visit. Then we’ll walk the river’s banks to catch the hippos sunning themselves.

We’ll explore South Luangwa National Park (3 nights) with the true experts: one of our local guides, Peter, was trained by Norman Carr, legendary “father” of the walking safari. The trails near our lodge pass among sausage trees where leopards often lounge. The birding is fantastic…we’ll meet local artisans…visit a village school…enjoy afternoon tea at the lodge…and take a unique nighttime game drive.

In Lower Zambezi National Park, our safari camp (3 nights) has been named one of Africa’s Best of the Best. We’re literally in the midst of extraordinary wildlife. On our excursions we may see lions, impala, crocodiles, cape buffalo and many others. Options at the camp also include canoeing, fishing and pontooning safaris. On our final morning we depart from the local airstrip for connections home.
