  • Timeless Vermont Walking Tour

Itinerary at a glance

We meet in Burlington for a lively waterfront walk along Lake Champlain with views of the Adirondacks to the west.

A short drive away, Stowe (2 nights) is our base for forays into classic New England. One dramatic walk includes Smugglers’ Notch and the expansive views of birch and maple forests to Bingham Falls. We’ll visit the fragrant Cold Hollow Cider Mill to see the presses at work, and accompany a naturalist along the trails surrounding the Trapp Family Lodge.

In the state capital of Montpelier, we spend mouth-watering time in the pastry classes of the New England Culinary Institute. Then it’s off to quaint Woodstock—complete with a village green, covered bridge, antique shops and our lodgings for the next two nights.

Vermont life is the theme—with leisurely visits to a working farm dating back to the 19th century, a glass-blowing workshop, and the Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury (1 night). The forests and mountains are never more than a few steps away and we take advantage of the proximity with walks past covered bridges and on a secret footpath to Robert Frost’s cabin, a spot known only to Vermont locals.

On our final day, we visit the Shelburne Museum, a unique collection of historic New England buildings spread out over a beautifully landscaped 45 acres, before returning to Burlington.
