A Week in Provence—Walking Tour

Itinerary at a glance

We'll meet in Avignon for a stroll that includes an exploration of the 14th century Papal Palace. Then it's on to the walled town of Vaison la Romaine (2 nights) and a walk across the crest of the Dentelles de Montmirail. In nearby Séguret, you can sip pastis under the plane trees and watch the local sculptors and Santon makers. As a special favor, a friend invites us into her kitchen for a lesson in provençal cooking…and a chance to lunch on the results.

From our hotel near the Pont du Gard (2 nights) we enjoy wonderful walking and take our lunch with the soaring aqueduct as backdrop. We also venture into the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards for a wine tasting.

Across the Rhone, our hotel retreat is nestled in the heart of St. Remy with its own pool and private gardens (2 nights). Morning is the perfect time for a walk through the lavender fields to picturesque Sénanque Abbey, followed by a visit to the classic hilltown of Gordes. Our last day, we follow in Cezanne's footprints through Aix-en-Provence before parting company at the rail station.
