Stretch your Classic Journey to the sky with a glorious visit to Lake Titicaca. Every grade-school student’s favorite geographic destination is a real find for travelers who love the thrill of exploring a place that’s not on everyone else’s radar screen. The world’s highest navigable lake, Titicaca is a vast blue reflection of the Andean sky. We love the endless zig-zag of the Andes. And our visits include awesome archeological ruins…as well as far more fragile manmade islands, woven from reeds. This 5-day/4-night extension is a startling, utterly South American experience and a fascinating contrast to Machu Picchu in every way.
Day 1: Cusco
At the end of your Classic Journey visit to Machu Picchu, you’ll return to Cusco for a leisurely evening on your own.
Day 2: Cusco / Juliaca / Puno
A morning flight takes us to Juliaca in the Puno Region of southeastern Peru. En route to the lake, we stop to explore the tower-like chullpas, the pre-Incan stone burial towers that erupt from the high treeless plain. The day ends as we check into our hotel in Puno, a provincial capital founded by the Spaniards in 1668 and nestling on the shore of Lake Titicaca.
Day 3: Puno / Suasi Island
We head out into the shimmering waters with a scenic boat ride to Suasi Island. En route, we pause at the Uros Islands, floating manmade rafts of matted reeds. (Think of it like walking on a waterbed!) We’ll also go ashore at Taquile Island where the Quechua natives are known for their handwoven textiles, some of the finest handicrafts in all of Peru. Finally, we settle in for two nights on Suasi, the only private island on the lake. Our cozy eco-lodge offers fine water views from every room.
Day 4: Suasi Island
The island is a peaceful speck in the vastness of Lake Titicaca. Just 106 acres in size, it offers great walks—from end to end, it’s just a half an hour or so on foot. Along the way, you may spot the small herd of wild vicuñas that live on the island. If you prefer, hop into a canoe for a paddle in the calm waters. Or treat yourself to the sauna or a massage.
Day 5: Suasi Island / Juliaca / Lima
After breakfast, we return to the lake’s shore for a drive to Juliaca and our air connection to Lima. There, we’ve arranged a day-use room for your comfort as you await your flight home.
